The Exchange Rate of Flour

by dwayneb on Thursday, February 18th, 2010

“There was a time before the beginning of this. It was your first meaningful journey. The ceaseless rain had made the mountain pass almost impossible to traverse, but you and your would-be squire, Benton, pushed your horses to their limits once you were on more secure ground. You arrived at the gates of a city you had never been to. It was a city built around a pleasant hill, a hill that cast its morning shadow upon an even more pleasant lake. (more…)

15: The Homonyms of Prey and Pray

by dwayneb on Monday, October 12th, 2009

It was a blustery morning in the valley. The storm possessed two qualities beyond all others: wrath and patience. But the wind was far too impetuous rushed out to announce the storm’s impending arrival. Leaves, long dead and trampled since the start of autumn months prior, were kicked up into the air and tossed about in seemingly random swirls. (more…)

14. Lights on the Horizons

by dwayneb on Friday, July 24th, 2009

The portal spit Garner out into near darkness. His clawed feet crashed down onto hard, cracked soil. As the portal closed behind him, light shrank even further around him. He kept his eyes sealed tightly, looking through the eyes of his sword instead.

13. Blood Falls On Snow

by dwayneb on Sunday, July 19th, 2009

A warm day had melted some of the snow covering the land, but the harsh night had frozen it into a thin layer of ice. If walked upon, it crunched under foot like delicately stretched glass. Snow had fallen in the morning concealing the ice with a fresh blanket of powder. Even the lightest of winds blew the flakes across the landscape. (more…)

12. The Bear and the Elf

by dwayneb on Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Gregor put his hands down on the table and faced the assembled crowd. Thieves, brigands, highwaymen and a few pirates comprised the motley group. Gregor smiled at them. It was a cheap smile that he thought made him look charming and gentlemanly. He liked to imagine himself as a dashing rogue, but the only time the term “dashing” applied to him was when he was fleeing the scene of his latest heist attempt. (more…)

11. The Birth of Fire

by dwayneb on Sunday, July 19th, 2009

As the legion approached the village, Garner looked down at it and called his men to a halt. He looked towards his captain, waiting for further commands. The other units started to slow as well, but while the men formed orderly ranks, Garner looked down at the small hamlet. (more…)

10. Liad’s Chasm

by dwayneb on Sunday, July 19th, 2009

                “Otroj?”
                “Yes Garner?”
“Make me laugh,” the redeemer said as he glanced over his shoulder to catch a glimpse of the sword’s face.
“I can’t,” the sword responded softly.
                “Why not?”
“Because you need to laugh, desperately.” (more…)

9. Before There Was Fire

by dwayneb on Sunday, July 19th, 2009

The hillside was almost the perfect spot for a picnic. If not perfection, it was the closest equivalent still within city walls. It sloped gently down into the outskirts of one of the residential areas. As it was the area favored by knights and officers, the streets were relatively crime free, except when committed by the knights and officers themselves. Since it was on a hill, the sun would actually set on a natural horizon rather than the artificial one created by the wall. (more…)

8. Stained Glass

by dwayneb on Sunday, July 19th, 2009

The Cathedral of Doniford was known throughout the kingdom and was the destination of many pilgrimages. It was not the age of the cathedral that made it famous, for it was fairly new, with a handful of the original builders still living in the town to perform maintenance when it was needed. The size of the cathedral was also nothing special for it was kept small in order to fit on the top of the modest hill. Even the bishop, had he not been the bishop of this particular cathedral, would not have been famous. He was a modest man who in a time of political favors, earned his position through hard work and steadfast dedication to the teachings of the gods rather than by being friends to royalty. (more…)

7. Eternity for a Minute

by dwayneb on Sunday, July 19th, 2009

                “Garner?”
“Yes, Otroj?” Garner asked from his position, slumped on the floor.
“We have got to talk about your issues with anger… I mean, who stabs a guy through the armpit?” (more…)
